T is for Three Layers (twice)

Three layer paintings are always a big hit in my painting classes. We start with a line - a pattern, a word, a energetic feeling. Then everyone receives a palette with red, yellow, blue and white paint and a test strip so that they can experiment with mixing the colors. This is my favorite part of the lesson, as shades and mixes begin to appear. This is basically a color-field painting.

Students paint each area - taking care to keep colors separate.  Then, when the paint is dry, white and black markers or oil pastels are used to draw patterns and lines on top. The results are always fabulous and everyone is successful.
Just for the fun of it, I doubled one of my three layer paintings in Photoshop, flipped one and then blended the two images.

Young Artist’s Studio: Elements of Design

Come discover how the elements of design (color, texture, shape, size, value and line) unite to create works of art. Young artists (Grades 1 – 5) will experiment with different tools, techniques and materials as they create their own work, develop skills and explore the work of famous artists. The studio atmosphere will encourage creative expression and offer opportunities for students to see and think about the visual world in new ways.

Another Summer Art Workshop for Creative Kids

A painting workshop in which young artists will get in touch with their creativity, love of color and art by creating abstract paintings. In this workshop we will experiment with brushes and paint, learn about a different abstract artist each class, analyze art created by that artist to understand how he or she used color, line, texture and composition to create their work, and use what we learn to create our own abstract art in paint.

Young Artist’s Studio: Painting

Bring on the paint, the brushes and the fun. In this workshop, young artists (Grades 1 – 6) will:

• Use paint, brushes and other tools to create line, shapes, patterns and texture.
• Consider how simple lines, shapes and color combine to create works of art.
• Discover the joy and technique of using color.
• Observe and talk about the work of famous artists.
• · Share our work and learn ways to talk about what we see and like.

The studio atmosphere is designed to encourage creative expression, shared ideas and flexible thinking, and offer opportunities for students to see and think about the visual world in new ways.

About the teacher: Tobi Kibel Piatek enjoys teaching creative kids. She is a lifelong artist and designer, with years of experience teaching, and teaching about, gifted kids. Her lively classes stimulate kids’ ideas and encourage them to think creatively and critically as they work on challenging and interesting art projects. She has a degree in Fine Arts from Pratt Institute in New York.
