K is for Kandinsky

Inspired by Kandinsky  Tempered Elan 1944

One of the very best parts of my life as an artist is the classes I take. I have often raved about my wonderful teacher, Illa Guttman, and her outstanding Dynamic Abstracts classes, all rooted in art history. Each class is an opportunity to be introduced to another abstract artist, analyze his or her work, and take inspiration from the artist to create our own work.

I tend to fall in love a lot in these classes, meeting old favorites and discovering new ones. But it was Moscow born Vassily Kandinsky (1866-1944) who stole my heart. His use of color, his imaginative shapes, his vivid use of line, the way he works within a flat plane, and so much more, all  resonate with my own Russian roots.

This painting (18x24 acrylic on canvas) was done in class, inspired by a work called Tempered Elan. The flowing shape reminds me of the gorgeous Russian embroidery I so admire, and the little bird shape recalls a Matryoshka (those brightly colored nesting dolls) for me. The colors and the pattern are my own, but the freedom to paint this free flowing shape is pure Kandinsky.

Young Artist’s Studio: Elements of Design

Come discover how the elements of design (color, texture, shape, size, value and line) unite to create works of art. Young artists (Grades 1 – 5) will experiment with different tools, techniques and materials as they create their own work, develop skills and explore the work of famous artists. The studio atmosphere will encourage creative expression and offer opportunities for students to see and think about the visual world in new ways. 

When:   Eight classes, 3:45 – 5 pm
              Tuesdays, September 25 – November 13, 2012

Another Summer Art Workshop for Creative Kids

A painting workshop in which young artists will get in touch with their creativity, love of color and art by creating abstract paintings. In this workshop we will experiment with brushes and paint, learn about a different abstract artist each class, analyze art created by that artist to understand how he or she used color, line, texture and composition to create their work, and use what we learn to create our own abstract art in paint.

Bring on the paint, the brushes and the fun. In this class, young artists (Grades 1 – 6) will explore the wonderful possibilities that result when child meets paint.

In this workshop we will:

• Use paint, brushes and other tools to create line, shapes, patterns and texture.
• Consider how simple lines, shapes and color combine to create works of art.
• Discover the joy and technique of using color.
• Observe and talk about the work of famous artists.
• Share our work and learn ways to talk about what we see.

The studio atmosphere is designed to encourage creative expression, shared ideas and flexible thinking, and offer opportunities for students to see and think about the visual world in new ways.

NOTE: This fine arts class is designed to be taken with the painting class, or on its own. It is a chance for young artists to:

• Develop and improve drawing and painting skills
• Learn design techniques to bring creative ideas to life
• Create drawings and paintings in different  styles
• Experiment with a variety of tools and media, including paint, pastels, markers and color pencils.
• Explore the work of famous artists.
• Share our work and learn ways to talk about what we see and like.

The studio atmosphere is designed to encourage creative expression, shared ideas and flexible thinking, and offer opportunities for students to see and think about the visual world in new ways.

About the teacher: Tobi Kibel Piatek enjoys teaching creative kids. She is a lifelong artist and designer, with years of experience teaching, and teaching about, talented and gifted kids. Her lively classes stimulate kids’ ideas and encourage them to think creatively critically as they work on challenging and interesting art projects. She has a degree in Fine Arts from Pratt Institute in New York.
